Haikyu!! Second Film Confirmed With A TV Short, Production Set To Start

The Haikyu!! 10th Event -Next Step- announced on Sunday that production has been green-lit for the anime film Gekijōban Haikyū!! VS Chiisana Kyojin (Haikyu!! Vs. The Little Giant).

Additionally, an anime short titled Haikyū!! Bakemono-tachi no Iku Tokoro (Where Monsters Go) is set to air on television.

The upcoming film will continue the story from HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle (Gekijōban Haikyu!! Gomi Suteba no Kessen), which was the first installment in the two-part Haikyu!! Final sequel film project. Susumu Mitsunaka is returning to write and direct the second sequel film at Production I.G.

Haikyū!! Bakemono-tachi no Iku Tokoro will portray the intense must-win match between Fukurōdani Academy and Mujinazaka High School.

Story Summary of the First Sequel Film

Crunchyroll describes the plot of the first sequel film as follows:

Shoyo Hinata joins Karasuno High’s volleyball club to be like his idol, a former Karasuno player known as the “Little Giant.” But, Hinata soon finds that he must team up with his middle school nemesis, Tobio Kageyama.

Their clashing styles turn into a surprising weapon, but can they beat their rival Nekoma High in the highly anticipated “Dumpster Battle,” the long-awaited ultimate showdown between two opposing underdog teams?

The first sequel film premiered in Japan on February 16, including screenings in IMAX. Susumu Mitsunaka, who previously directed the first and third Haikyu!! television anime seasons, both directed and wrote the screenplay for the film.

During its opening weekend, the film sold 1,529,000 tickets, earning 2,230,465,540 yen (approximately US$14.12 million) within its first three days. The film later screened in North American theaters on May 31, 2024, in both Japanese with English subtitles and an English-dubbed version.

The Haikyu!! anime staff initially announced the two-part film project in August 2022. The first installment focuses on the long-awaited “fated showdown” between Karasuno High and Nekoma High.
