The “Sōsō no Frieren [Kinkyō Hōkoku]” (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End [Status Report]) livestream, held on Wednesday, revealed the teaser visual and confirmed a January 2026 premiere for the second television anime season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sōsō no Frieren), based on the manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe.
The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End anime debuted on September 29, 2023, with a two-hour special. It was the first television anime to premiere in NTV’s “Kinyō Roadshow,” a Friday evening programming block traditionally reserved for feature films.
Following this special, the anime began airing regular episodes on October 6 at 11:00 p.m. JST in NTV’s newly introduced anime timeslot, “FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT.”
The first season aired continuously for two cours (quarters of a year) until March 2024. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired and has also made an English dub available.
Viz Media has licensed the manga and describes its story as follows:
The adventure is over but life goes on for an elf mage just beginning to learn what living is all about. Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land.
But Frieren will long outlive the rest of her former party. How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her?
Decades after their victory, the funeral of one of her friends confronts Frieren with her own near immortality. Frieren sets out to fulfill the last wishes of her comrades and finds herself beginning a new adventure…
Keiichirō Saitō (Bocchi the Rock!) directed the first season at Madhouse. Tomohiro Suzuki (ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., One-Punch Man, Boogiepop and Others) oversaw the series scripts, while Reiko Nagasawa (takt op. Destiny) served as character designer.
The music was composed by Evan Call (Violet Evergarden, Josee, The Tiger and the Fish, Muv-Luv Alternative).
Yamada and Abe launched the ongoing Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday in April 2020.
The series has earned several accolades, including the New Creator Prize at the 25th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021 and the 14th Manga Taisho Award in the same year.
It was also nominated for Best Shōnen Manga at Kodansha’s 45th Annual Manga Awards in 2021 and again in the 46th edition in May 2022.
Additionally, the American Library Association’s Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT) listed the manga in its Top 10 Best Graphic Novels for Adults Reading List in 2022.
